All about Turmeric

What can I say, this blogging is getting very interesting..Just had a wonderful "aum" cooked meal with my friends..
I thought it might be a good idea to write about TURMERIC.
Let's start with some botanical info..
Turmeric (Curcuma longa) is a rhizomatous herbaceous perennial plant of the ginger family, Zingiberaceae.
I consider Turmeric an absolute natural boon to the world as a powerful healer. The active ingredient in turmeric is curcumin.
Curcumin is the principal curcuminoid of turmeric. The other two curcuminoids are desmethoxycurcumin and bis-desmethoxycurcumin. The curcuminoids are polyphenols and are responsible for the yellow color of turmeric.
Tumeric has been used for over 5000 years in India..

I use a lot of turmeric in AUM cooking and the medicinal properties of this spice are phenomenal.(it makes the food so bright and happy, you just cannot be depressed with turmeric in your diet)
Long known for its anti-inflammatory properties, recent research has revealed that turmeric is a natural wonder, proving beneficial in the treatment of many different health conditions from cancer to Alzheimer's disease.

It is important to know that turmeric can be consumed and used topically as it is a natural antiseptic and antibacterial agent.I mix turmeric powder with a little water and apply it to small cuts and burns,I get, while I cook.

Did you know that when combined with cauliflower, turmeric has shown to prevent prostate cancer and stop the growth of existing prostate cancer !!

Turmeric has helped in the treatment and prevention of several cancers that include breast cancer, lung cancer, melanoma, multiple myeloma, pancreatic cancer and childhood leukemia. It also prevents metastases from occurring in many different forms of cancer.
It boosts the effects of the chemo drug paclitaxel and reduces its side effects.Turmeric also stops the growth of new blood vessels in tumors.

It is a very good idea to drink a glass of warm water every morning (especially during Spring and Summer allergies),mix it with 1/2 tsp of turmeric powder and the juice of half a lemon, first thing in the morning on an empty stomach.Turmeric is a natural liver detoxifier and helps with allergy relief.

The curcumin prevents and slows the progression of Alzheimer's disease by removing amyloyd plaque buildup in the brain.

I do not believe in chemicals being pumped into a person's body.I consider the body a temple and often let my clients/patients know that turmeric works as well as most prescription anti-inflammatory drugs but sans the side effects because of its potent natural anti-inflammatory properties.Hence,it is a natural treatment for arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis.

Many of my clients with MS and ALS have shown remarkable improvement by adding turmeric to their diet.It is a natural painkiller and cox-2 inhibitor.

I use it for people with skin conditions like eczema and psoriasis all the time, both topically and given as a supplement.

Contraindications: Turmeric should not be used by people with gallstones or bile obstruction. Though turmeric is often used by pregnant women, it is important to consult with a doctor before doing so as turmeric can be a uterine stimulant.
